Although American Sign Language is based on English, you don’t usually translate word for word. Usually people try to use as few signs as possible to communicate the idea that is being spoken. This is especially true if someone is speaking very quickly and you are trying to translate what they are saying. This adds a bit of difficulty when trying to learn sign language fast, but it will still be less difficult than learning a foreign language.
